Comment At Will...

I have been thinking lately about the comments on songs on thesixtyone. Yes, it's true. I comment a lot on songs I like. I comment for two reasons:
  1. Providing the Artist feedback on the song they just put up: After all, Instant Feedback is one of the key draws of thesixtyone
  2. Provide other listeners an instant mechanism to see what someone else thought of the song they are listening to.

Now, I never claimed to be a worthy wordsmith, weaving together wondrous imagery for comments and my comments span the spectrum from the inane "Awesome" and "sweet tune" to the slightly more well thought out, describing what I like about the song's makeup, sound, vocals and lyrics.

I almost always read the comments on a song that I am listening to. I like seeing everyone else's perspective and at times, wit. I also think that comments are one of the reasons Artists like this site. I would like to see more comments on songs and sometimes, the comment parody is as interesting (if not more) than the actual song - Case in point: STEFY! There was a time a few months ago that it was suggested that we comment on songs more, just to provide that feedback. What do you think of that idea?

Maybe a post regarding different ways of describing music would be in order too. Seems like Pitchfork.com has the most strange verbiage to describe songs and we should add some of those words to our wiki as well as develop our own verbs. First one on the list: TASTY!

I tend to make some unoriginal comment on songs I like a lot or where I notice something worth mentioning. I don't know if we should try to emulate Pitchfork -- their writing is a little over the top...

I'm more than happy to read well-written, thought-provoking reviews on music, and I try to read some of Pitchfork's reviews from time to time. But when I feel like I need a handful of Tylenol and a 3-hour nap after reading something obviously poured from a Thesaurus, that's where I draw the line.

*(Then again, maybe I should finally start reading above a 7th grade level.)

The idea isn't to make it that complex... just describe the music and what's good about it. Pitchfork comment was a little over the top! We did what pitchfork can never do: describe a great tune with one word! TASTY!

I feel that at a bare minimum the person that discovers the song should be commenting (although I've been guilty of not doing that lately).
I know I typically skip the bumps notices in my subscription feed and go straight to what people are talking about.

If I ever got a chance to discover songs any more, I'd totally make comments when I did it. :) I think it's a good idea (though I know I haven't exactly been consistent with it in the past).

I was afraid my post about comments wasn't going to get any comments! Now that would have just been ironic (like a black fly in your chardonnay!)

Or rain on your wedding day?

Wait, that's not ironic. Disappointing maybe, but not ironic. Or is the irony of the statement the lack of irony, then?

Silkworm sent me this on my Comment Wall... How Ironic is it?

Saw your comment and thought you and lanky would appreciate this. There are some other classics there too.
